The Christmas Day Trading Act 2004 received Royal Assent on 28th October 2004

NOTES

The Christmas Trading Act 2004 is headed "An Act to prohibit the opening of large shops on Christmas Day and to restrict the loading or unloading of goods at such shops on Christmas Day" and came into force on 9th December 2004.

BASIC POSITION

This Act prohibits any large shop from opening on Christmas Day. It means that many a shop worker will in practice become entitled to Christmas Day off, regardless of whether it is on a Sunday or any other day. The Act extends to England and Wales, but not to Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Scotland later enacted its own similar, but not identical, rules (see Acts of Parliament etc/Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Trading (Scotland) Act 2007 ).

There are official explanatory notes on the Christmas Day Trading Act 2004 on the Parliament website

See also notes at Unfair dismissal/automatically unfair dismissals/sunday work and/or at Holidays/public and bank holidays ) and/or at Acts of Parliament etc/Sunday Working (Scotland) Act 2003 .
