go to updated reference in this note.
A new Armed Forces Act is required every five years to keep the Army Act 1955, the Air Force Act 1955 and the Naval Discipline Act 1957, referred to collectively as the Service Discipline Acts (SDAs), in force. The previous Armed Forces Act 1996 (see notes at Specific employments/army, navy and air force/regulars ) expired in August 2001 and was then replaced by the Armed Forces Act 2001.

The Armed Forces Act 2001 also provides for changes to the powers of the Military Police and other changes, not relevant to this employment law program, designed to bring courts martial procedures more into line with those of the civil courts and to ensure they do not contravene Human Rights laws (see notes at Human Rights/fair trial ). The government has provided official explanatory notes on the Armed Forces Act 2001.

The
Armed Forces Act 2001 (Commencement No. 8) Order 2007, SI 2007/662 made on 24th August 2006 includes a list of commencement dates of various sections of the Act from 11th May 2001 onwards.
