The Scottish Commission for Human Rights Act 2006 received Royal Assent on 8th December 2006.



The purpose of this Act is to "provide for the appointment and functions of the Scottish Commissioner for Human Rights".

The intention is to establish an independent commissioner to promote awareness and understanding of, and respect for, human rights in Scotland. He or she will be able to conduct inquiries into the policies or practices of Scottish public authorities in relation to human rights. He or she will have power to deal only with issues devolved to Scotland.

The first commencement order brings basic provisions into effect on 8th November 2007, in particular s.1, introducing schedule 1 but only for the purposes of the paragraphs that make general provision about the Commission (see the Scottish Commission for Human Rights Act 2006 (Commencement No. 1) Order. SSI 2007/448).

The rest of the Act is in force from 1st April 2008 (see the Scottish Commission for Human Rights Act 2006 (Commencement No. 2) Order 2008, SSI 2008/112).
