See Main Topic SEX DISCRIMINATION in this programme generally.

The main relevant UK law is in two separate statutes.

(i) The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 makes gender based discrimination in the employment field unlawful if it relates to recruitment, promotion, dismissal or general conduct of the employment relationship.

(ii) The Equal Pay Act 1970 (which did not come into force until the end of 1975, at the same time as the Sex Discrimination Act) makes gender based discrimination unlawful if it relates to pay (in the widest sense).

European Community law has a most important influence in matters concerned with sex discrimination especially if questions of "equal pay" are involved - see SEX DISCRIMINATION/european law aspects .
