a contract clause under which an employee "may be dismissed with immediate effect" does not give the employer the right to dismiss the employee without pay in lieu of notice. The contract must be read as a whole but as a general rule, unless serious misconduct has occurred, clear and unambiguous wording would be required to give an employer the right to dismiss an employee without pay in lieu of notice.
