The Flexible Working Bill is a private members Bill introduce on 27th March 2007

NOTES

  • The Flexible Working Bill has its first reading on 27th March 2007
  • 2nd reading was provisionally fixed for 19th October 2007 but the Bill was then dropped..

The Bill was a private members Bill introduced by Lorely Burt MP (Lib Dem: Solihull). If enacted it would have extended the right to request flexible working to all parents with children under the age of 18.

"LorelyLorely Burt MP presents her Bill with Susie Ankrett (centre) from Plum Personnel in Solihull and Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP (left)>

Introducing the Bill, Ms Burt said "Maternity leave is a bête noire for many small companies. When one employee constitutes 25 per cent. of the work force, losing them on maternity - or paternity - leave obviously causes a problem. How much better it would therefore be if such an employee could work flexibly, continuing to contribute - in an albeit more limited way - instead of being lost altogether for a period".

For further detail see Hansard 27th March 2007 col 1303 for Ms Burt's speech in the House of Commons, 27th March 2007 introducing the Bill and see generally notes at Flexible Working/2003 rules .

There is a talk on flexible working by Ms Burt on YouTube, 28th February 2007.
