a promiseof a salary increase made in casual conversation between an employer and his manager at the office Christmas dance is unlikely to be legally enforceable.

in order for there to be a legally binding and enforceable contractual commitment, there must be certainty as to the contractual commitment entered into, or facts from which certainty can be established.
