The Members of Parliament (Pay and Responsibilities) Bill had its first reading in the House of Commons on 3rd June 2008.
Peter Lilley's speech on introducing this Bill (Hansard HC col 644 on 3.6.08) is worth looking at by those who are concerned with the impact of Europe on British affairs (especially the Lisbon Treaty revamp of the proposed European Constitution). It is also worth looking at by anyone interested in how at least some MP's view matters which influence their colleagues' voting decisions. Unless of course the Bill is intended as a joke.
Ths Bill itself would simply require the Senior Salaries Review Body to take account of transfers of powers between Parliament and European Union institutions when making recommendations on the pay of Members of Parliament.
However Peter Lilley's speech makes it plain that the Bill is really a lever being applied in an effort to persuade MP's to vote against the European Union (Amendment) Bill (see Bills before Parliament/European Union (Amendment) Bill ie the Bill designed to secure approval of the Lisbon Treaty)
