Authority for the propositions that:-
- British Courts and tribunals must interpret UK law compatably with the relevant European law, notably the European Convention on Human Rights so far as that is possible;
- British Courts and tribunals will not only construe ambiguous words in a British statute in a way which ensures conformity with European law but can and will even insert wording into a UK statute if that is the only way to ensure conformity with EC law, provided the inserted wording is not contrary to the wording actually used in the statute and is "compatible with the underlying thrust of the legislation being construed".
