European Commission strengthens its commitment to equality between women and men

The European Commission has introduced a "Women's Charter" - which "represents the commitment of the Commission to making gender equality a reality in the EU" - ahead of International Women's Day on 8th March 2010.

EU to provide 45,000 micro-loans to unemployed and small entrepreneurs

The EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs and Inclusion, László Andor, has announced the creation of a "European Microfinance Facility" - which is being set up to provide loans to people who have lost their jobs and want to start or further develop their own small business.

New legislation to reduce injuries for 3.5 million healthcare workers in Europe

The Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council, which was held in Brussels on 8th March 2010, led to the adoption of a Directive to prevent injuries and infections to healthcare workers from sharp objects such as needle sticks.

EU Council extends parental leave

The Council has formally adopted the new Directive on parental leave (16945/09 + 5922/1/10 REV 1 ), which will replace Directive 96/34 currently in force.
