• Chief Constable of West Yorks Police & ors v Khan [2001] UKHL 48 on 11th October 2001 (overrules the Court of Appeal and holds that for the purpose of deciding whether an employer's refusal to provide a reference for an employee who is suing the employer for race or sex discrimination is itself unlawful victimisation, it is legitimate to take into account that "they are not only employer and employee but also adversaries in litigation". Also provides useful guidance on correct choice of comparator in discrimination cases).

• Chief Adjudication Officer v. Stafford and anor [2001] UKHL 33 on 28th June 2001 (3-2 decision confirming Court of Appeal ruling that a special needs assistant in a school who earned less than £4,000 pa and who was unable to find work during school holidays was not entitled to job seekers allowance while not working in school holidays. The decision will affect all "term-time only" workers such as school dinner ladies and cleaners).

• Lister & ors v Henley Hall Ltd, [2001] UKHL 22 on 3rd May 2001 (overrules the Court of Appeal and holds that the traditional argument that an employer is vicariously responsible for the acts of an employee who was using an unauthorised method to do a job he was authorised to do but is not vicariously liable if the employee was simply doing something which was unauthorised should not allow an employer to escape liability for an employee's acts of sex abuse against children in the employer's care).

• International Power Plc v. Healy and ors (formerly National Power v. Feldon and ors and National Grid Company Plc v. Mayes and ors) 4th April 2001 (overrules the Court of Appeal and restores the 1997 High Court judgment of Robert Walker J. to the effect that subject to the rules of any particular scheme pension fund surpluses can be used to benefit the employer)

• Johnson (A.P.) v. Unisys Ltd 22nd March 2001 (confirms that the manner of dismissal does not affect damages in a common law action for wrongful dismissal but does affect compensation in an unfair dismissal claim)

• Anyanwu & anor v. South Bank Student Union and anor and CRE and Hallam v. Cheltenham Borough Council & ors both on 22nd March 2001 (re meaning of the phrase "knowingly aids" as used in Race Relations Act 1976 s.33 - Anyanwu overrules the Court of Appeal; Hallam upholds the Court of Appeal)

• Bank of Credit and Commerce International SA (in liquidation) v Ali and ors 1st March 2001 (re extent to which a compromise agreement can cover matters of which the parties are unaware when they make the agreement)

• Preston & Others v. Wolverhampton Healthcare N.H.S. Trust & Others and Fletcher & Others v. Midland Bank Plc (re part-timers backdated rights to occupational pensions)

• Attorney General v. Blake and Another 27th July 2000 (re injunction to prevent George Blake profiting from royalties on his book from his UK publisher)

• Waters (A.P.) v. Commissioner of Police For The Metropolis 27th July 2000 (re employer's responsibility for sexual harassment by one employee of another).

• Holland v. Lampen-Wolfe 20th July 2000 (re immunity from suit of UK based employee of a foreign state).

• Taylor v. Secretary of State For Scotland HL 11th May 2000 (re age discrimination as breach of contract).

• R v Sec'y of State For Employment ex p. Seymour Smith and anor HL 17th February 2000 (re period of employment required to qualify for rights).

• Glasgow City Council and ors v. Marshall and Ors HL 3rd February 2000 (re material factor/material difference" defence in Equal Pay claims)
