The European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Act and the legislative history and impact of Brexit

Key Points

  • The European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill (WAB)  had to pass before the UK left the EU in order for any Withdrawal Agreement to have domestic legal effect. On 6 November 2019 Parliament was dissolved and as a consequence the WAB failed to enter the statute books. A new WAB 2019/20 was introduced by the new (December 2019) Parliament in order for the UK to leave the EU with a deal
  • Royal assent was give to the WAB on 23rd January 2020 and the MEPs ratified the UK withdrawal agreement on 29 January making 31st January 2020 'Brexit day'
  • However, a transition period continued until 31st Decembfer 2020
  • This card tracks events from March 2018.
