Manchester College of Arts and Technology v. Smith - Trade union related dismissal [2007] EAT

5 lecturers (Messrs Smith, Sivoro, McIntyre, Brown and Ms Lynch) were dismissed by the Manchester College of Art and Technology (MANCAT) in 2004. MANCAT said the reason was their redundancy. The lecturers claimed it was because they were members of, or had taken part in the activities of, an independent trade union. It is not clear from the EAT judgment whether they claimed this was the reason for dismissal rather than the reason for selection for redundancy.
