Ms O'Brien, a teacher, had attempted to forge links with a school in Gambia, ultimately with the purpose of securing accreditation for a linking initiative promoted by the British Council. She took a trip to Gambia to visit the school (it was disputed exactly what were the terms agreed between her employer school and herself with regard to this trip) and contracted a viral illness from her contact with the children there and had to take sick leave.
