X, R (on the application of) v Y School - High Court 21.2.07

X, a 12 year old Muslim girl, was a pupil at Y, a selective all-girls grammar school. Her three older sisters had previously attended the school and had all worn the niqab veil (a veil covering the entire face and head save for the eyes) whilst being taught by a male member of staff. X, however, wished to wear the niqab on a permanent basis. The school refused her permission to do so, emphasising not just the potential difficulties for her teachers but also the importance of a uniform policy promoting 'an ethos of equality and cohesion'.
