Runkee & anor v United Kingdom - widows, widowers and social security benefits - ECtHR 10.5.07

Mr Runkee's and Mr White's wives died in 1998 and 1999 respectively. Both men were informed that, as men, they would not be entitled to claim either the Widow's Payment or Widow's Pension under the system which was in force until 2001. Neither had dependent children. They contended that they had been treated less favourably than women in an analogous situation and that this amounted to a breach of Article 14 of the European Human Rights Convention.
