Shanks v Swan Hunter Group Plc - High Court (QBD) 24.5.07
A former Tyneside shipyard worker, Raymond Shanks, has been awarded £948,565 at the High Court (Judge Hickinbottom) after developing a fatal asbestos-related lung cancer. Matthias Kelly QC and Browell, Smith & Co, the solicitors who represented Mr Shanks, achieved such a high award largely because Mr Shanks has responsibility for his grandchildren whose father, Mr Shanks's son, had himself died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (see also BBC News, 25th May 2007).
