National Union of Journalists v Champion Newspapers - union recognition - CAC 17.7.07
An example of an application to the Central Arbitration Committee under TULR(C)A 1992 by the NUJ for recognition for collective bargaining purposes by Champion Newspapers. The CAC's role is to ensure that the terms of Schedule A1 of the Act are met. The CAC found that this was a valid request (NUJ is an independent trade union, and the employer had 55 workers of whom 8 came in the proposed bargaining unit). To meet paragraph 36(1)(a) at least 10% of the workers in the proposed bargaining unit must be members of the union - here 50% were.
