Ivanova v Bulgaria - religious discrimination - ECHR 12.7.07
Against a background of government action in Bulgaria to limit the activities of certain religious groups, Ms Ivanova was dismissed from her job as a swimming pool manager at her local school. The Bulgarian courts upheld the government's argument that she was dismissed because she no longer met the qualification requirements of the post.
The ECHR disagreed. It held that Ms Ivanova had been dismissed due to her religious views, in contravention of Article 9 of the Convention on Human Rights. It ordered the Bulgarian government to pay her compensation accordingly.
