Cooper & others v Isle of Wight College - one day's industrial action can lead to stoppage of no more than one day's pay - QBD 30.11.07
The College deducted wages from Mr Cooper and his fellow staff after they took a day's industrial action. There was no challenge to the fact that the College was entitled to do this, but exactly what sum could be deducted? The staff argued for the value of one day's pay (1/260 of annual salary). The College wanted a greater sum to represent the loss to the employer from the day's action (1/228 of annual salary, which would discount for holidays as well as weekends).
