Norman v Yellow Pages Sales Ltd - employer right to deduct tax where settlement was silent as to nature of compensation
Where a compromise agreement or settlement does not itself apportion its award between taxable and non-taxable elements, the employer is correct to deduct tax according to the normal rules and is not obliged to make any apportionment: it is for the employee to sort out the position with HMRC if he believes it should be different.
