Assistant referees were unfairly made to retire at 48

Four assistant referees - Robert Martin, from Sheffield, Hereford-based Andy Williams, John Stokes, from the Wirral, and Mark Hutchinson, of Nottingham - were forced to retire at the set retirement age of 48 for officials working in the Premier League and Football League (PGMOL). They lodged claims of unfair dismissal and age discrimination with an employment tribunal against Professional Game Match Officials Limited - the body which appointed them as referees (and subsequently took the decision to prohibit them from officiating at top-level football matches on grounds of age).
