Whilst the authority of the General Medical Council to investigate doctors is not limited to areas purely of clinical practice, and it can cover doctors' serious incompetencies in related fields such as research, its jurisdiction does not extend to administrative or policy tasks carried out by doctors that are not closely linked to the practice of medicine; such functions are not covered by Medical Act 1983, s.35C(2).
