EC Pregnant Worker's directive does have direct effect but does not give employees absent from work by reason of pregnancy automatic entitlement to all the rights to which they would have been entitled if they had been at work (A-G's opinion).

European Court of Justice Advocate General Maduro has given his opinion in this case (which may or may not be followed by the full Court in due course) concerning the rights of new mothers
