X v Mid Sussex Citizens Advice Bureau & Anor IRLR 146, [2013] - discrimination and volunteers

Non-remunerated work does not fall within the definition of "work" or "occupation" in the Equal Treatment Framework Directive. Accordingly a volunteer (unless they have a contract to work personally for those to whom they provide their services) does not fall within the wide definition of "employment" in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, or Equality Act 2010, and cannot bring a discrimination claim.
