A probation officer who had been made redundant complained that pension payable to him had been reduced below the original estimate because that estimate had failed to take account of an army pension to which he was also entitled. In addition to financial loss the probation officer claimed he had suffered an "unacceptable level of stress, anxiety and depression". The Pensions Ombudsman dismissed his complaint. The High Court rejected his appeal against this decision even though it had failed to deal with non-financial loss and even though there had been no oral hearing.
