A clear distinction must be made between expenditure that is incurred "wholly, necessarily and exclusively in the performance of the duties of the employment" and that which merely puts a taxpayer in a position to perform such duties: only the former – which appears to be subject to conditions that are impossible to meet in practice – is tax-deductible.
