Dr Wray claimed damages for breach of his contract of employment, damages for libel and a statutory redundancy payment against his former employer, the University of the West Indies. He held a senior professorial position but funding for his post expired and he was demoted to Senior lecturer status while he was away on sabbatical leave in 1996. He sued and lost in Jamaica. He appealed and lost but only by a 2-1 majority. The dissenting judge would have awarded him damages for libel of J$6m and a statutory redundancy payment of just over J$3.36m. He appealed again.
