CIS radically reshaped its business. It altered the terms and conditions of its employed insurance salesmen. This amounted to dismissal and, for the majority who accepted the changes, re-employment. Those who refused the new terms, and left CIS, claimed that the work they did was so changed by the new arrangements that they were redundant. An employment tribunal disagreed. Therefore there was no entitlement to redundancy payments. The seven salesmen appealed.
